Popup problems - You must disable your anti-popup software. (e.g. Norton Internet Security Pop-up Blocking.) WebCT uses lots of pop-up windows.
Password problems
- (Recommended) - If you forget your WebCT password.
or
- (Not Recommended) - If you forget your WebCT password.
If you are using a webmail program (Hotmail, GMail, etc.), this is not the best button to choose.
(i.e. You should choose the first button ("using a form") instead of this button.)
Only the WebCT System Administrator can reset your password. Your "Section Instructor" can NOT reset your password.
WebCT ID = UserID = UserName - The WebCT ID is your student number. Since the system is case-sensitive, you must use uppercase letters (i.e. A999999 and NOT a999999).
At the end of each semester they delete all students from the WebCT database and enter all students for the new semester. This means that student passwords are re-set (ddmmyy). It also means that students can no longer access their courses from the previous semester. Neither of these points applies to teachers.
E-mail in WebCT - Please include your other e-mail addresses (Sympatico, Videotron, Hotmail, GMail, Yahoo, etc.) in the body (e.g. in your signature) of your message. I don't use WebCT for answering your e-mails.
If you don't provide me with your usual e-mail address (i.e. non-WebCT e-mail address), it will probably take much muchmuchMUCH longer to respond to your message.
Example Signature

Ima G. Student

Why are teachers no longer allowed to change students' passwords? This is a "feature" of the new version of WebCT which is not necessarily an improvement.
Mail should allow signatures that users can customize and add to the message when and where they want (by clicking on a button while creating a message).
All users should be required to set up e-mail forwarding.
No students (less than 1%??) check their WebCT e-mail every day.
Most students (99%??) check their personal webmail almost every day.
If users don't set up "Mail Forwarding", they may never get messages sent to their WebCT account.
When a user sets up an e-mail address (webmail) in WebCT, it should automatically activate Mail Forwarding.
At the very very very least, the checkbox for "Mail Forwarding" should be right beside the e-mail address field; NOT in the obscure "My Tool Options" tab.
Everyone (students and teachers) has trouble finding this "Mail Forwarding" checkbox that is hidden in the "My Tool Options".
Mail has To:, CC:, BCC fields when you "Create Message".
However, if you dare to type in an e-mail address, you will get a nasty message that makes absolutely no sense. The e-mail will not be sent. "Number of errors found: 1 Unable to find the recipient ''testingwebct@hotmail.com''. One of the following may be the problem: the user is not enrolled in the course, user name searching is disabled, or there are two users with the same name. If there are two users with the same name, use the recipient's user name."
So, there are e-mail address fields, but you can't use them.
You must "Browse for Recipients" and choose from the list.
Students (and I) are confused and frustrated by this.
One thing that would make WebCT e-mail less confusing, would be if the "To", "CC", and "BCC" text input fields were removed completely.
If WebCT users are not allowed to type in an e-mail address, then why is there a field for users to type in an e-mail address?
Of course, the option to select from the list ("Browse for Recipients …") must be retained.
What happens if a student wants to send a message to someone in another class or to someone not on WebCT?
WebCT e-mail is too restrictive.
Students should be able to send e-mail even if the return address is not revealed or available to outsiders.

Some e-Packs contain proprietary material that does not belong to the college and is not public domain. Students require an expensive login (username & password).
At the end of the term, the teacher makes a backup (WebCT's ZIP format) and everything seems ok. It is NOT ok.
Because of the proprietary content, this "backup" will refuse to install to any other course section. The teacher's backup ZIP file is completely useless and all of the information from the backed up course is lost forever.
Example: Marketing by Armstrong, PearsonEd (because of 'OneKey')
A13: If you have adopted an access-code protected WebCT e-Pack, students without a student access code cannot enter the content areas of your course. If you have adopted an open access e-Pack, your students will be free to use the content. Q19: Who can I contact for technical support after I have adopted one of your WebCT e-Packs? A19: Once you have adopted one of our WebCT e-Packs you are eligible for our WebCT Product Support. Instructors and system administrators have access to a dedicated phone number (1-877-55WEBCT) and email ( pearsoned@webct.com) for assistance with our WebCT courses. Q20: Who can my IT staff call with technical support or installation questions? A20: Like you, they can send email to pearsoned@webct.com with any questions that arise before the decision is made to adopt one of our WebCT courses. After adoption, they may also contact WebCT Support at either pearsoned@webct.com or 1-877-55WEBCT.
OneKey Login - Please do NOT use this link to login to OneKey. Please login from your WebCT account.
"OneKey is a multimedia tool offered (in Course Compass, WebCT, Blackboard) whith extra materials for students and faculty. Normally OneKey can be ordered at no extra cost with the text under specific package ISBNs." A.Dykler 2007-01-16
Marketing Toolkit (within OneKey) - animated marketing concepts to help students visualize what they are learning
CourseCompass - US$24 - You don't need this because you have OneKey with your WebCT account.
Here are the steps you need to take to back up your course in WebCT 6:
Log in to your WebCT 6 account.
Click on the course you want to back up.
Click on the Build tab.
Click on Manage Course (under Designer Tools in the left-hand menu)
Go down the list to the Backup link and click on it.
Click on the “Back Up Course” button. Your request will take a few minutes to process and will show as “In the Queue” in the meantime.
Once you see “Completed”
þ Check off the name of the file.
Click on the Action Link next to the file name.
Save as File
Save the backup file in My Files (the default location) by pressing on OK in the pop-up window.
Your course is now backed up in the system and saved in your WebCT files. Thereby, you can access it from any one of your WebCT courses at a later time.
To double ensure your course will be retrievable at a later time, you should also save it to your computer or a USB device. To do so:
Make sure you are in a course where you are a Designer
Click on the Build tab
Click on File Manager (under Designer Tools in the left-hand menu)
At the top, do not accept the default, which is the course files list.
At the top, click on the My Files button.
Click on the name of the course you have backed up.
þ Check off the name of the file.
A “Save As” window will appear.
You can choose to save the file to your computer or to some other device such as a USB key or CD.
Your course is now saved outside of WebCT as well.
